Project Operations

The Operations and Control Center and Maintenance Facility provide the following:

• All Emergency Communications - radio, emergency telephones, fire / intrusion alarms (SCADA)

• Safety functions of Automatic Train Control (ATP, ATS)
• Emergency power control
• Vital computer systems
• Emergency lighting
• Fire protection systems/fire suppression
• Emergency plans and procedures
• Security control and coordination
• Train maintenance, spare parts, yards, and shops

Ridership is projected after 10 years of operations to reach approximately 113,000 passengers per day.

The projection was for 2010, based on a start of revenue service in 2001. The first year of revenue service was 2005 and the ridership was approximately 30,000 boardings per day.

Tren Urbano is currently operated by Alternate Concepts, Inc. (ACI) under contract to Alternativa Transporte Integrado (ATI). ACI reports directly to ATI, which is a department of the Autoridad Metropolitana de Autobus, the authority responsible for all transit in metropolitan San Juan.

ACI is responsible for day-to-day operations, maintenance, security, and all facilities and infrastructure of the Tren Urbano system. Their contract expires on June 5, 2010.
