System Description
Tren Urbano is a heavy rail rapid transit project. Phase I of Tren Urbano is 17.2 kilometers in length. The project includes 16 stations, each 138 meters in length, capable of servicing six-car trains. Ten stations are elevated, four are at- or below grade in an open cut, and two are underground.
Tren
Urbano begins as an elevated track in Bayamón, is largely at grade
through Guaynabo and into Río Piedras, is in a tunnel section through
most of Río Piedras, and finally continues elevated through Hato Rey.
The
stations include automated fare collection systems with entry and exit fare
gates. Vertical access is provided, where necessary, by escalators and elevators.
Five of the stations have park and ride lots. Seven of the stations will serve
as transportation centers with facilities to transfer between the train and/or
bus and público routes.
The
system includes 74 rail vehicles, which are powered by 750v direct current
from third rail. Vehicle operations are fully automated, controlled by the
automatic train control system. Each train consist has two crew members. The
stations and rail vehicles are designed to meet the accessibility requirements
of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Tren
Urbano includes a maintenance / storage facility in the center of the system
between the Torrimar and Martínez Nadal stations. Tren Urbano also
has a centrally controlled communications and train control system. The central
computers and controls are located in an Operations Control Center in the
yards and shops complex.
